Is it getting any better ?

We seem to be in a cycle where a scab forms, then lifts and flakes off. I think the wound is slightly smaller each time but it's hard to tell......

and not helped by a case of mild colic middle of last week :(

I had started trying to give them a few hours of turn out at the weekend so their systems would get used to grass. Fi was fairly stiff and tired from the extra activity,so then they had two days in the yard. But I had an offer to turn them out mid week - they went out about midday and came in when I got home about half six.

When I went down later to do last stables, Fi wouldn't eat her carrots - which is unheard of ! It quickly became clear she had a touch of colic and I didn't fancy it turning into something worse. One vet visit and two injections later, and she was starting to feel a bit better.

They went out again for 4-5 hours each day at the weekend and were fine. Vet visit is the middle of this week. Fingers crossed !

Heading in the right direction

Two days after, the wound had started to dry out but was still raised.

And then the scab started to lift slightly around the edges, and then lift a bit more...

This morning I let Fi out in the yard without putting the tape up, knowing she would go and roll in the  dirt/mud where the grass used to be. She was such a happy horsey and even managed to keep her leg out of trouble :)

The vet came and whipped the scab off - and this is what it looks like now:-

Next vet check is two weeks time, and she can move a bit more.... but not too much. I may turn them out in the field for a short while over the weekend.

At the same time she had her annual vaccination and her teeth done. Duds got sedated and had his teeth done. But Rosie escaped til later in the year.

Later in the day I came back to discover this scene of equine contentment - all three sunbathing in the yard :)

Not nearly there...

Quiz question - if you have a bandage on a leg providing pressure, and then take that bandage off, what happens ?

This is Fi's leg yesterday when I took the bandage off

The Vet did warn me it would probably bleed a bit....it did :(
And the skin on the lower leg is fairly fragile.

It's not easy to see in this picture from today, but the unhealed area has bulged out.

The leg is also puffy. Again this is likely to be because it has been compressed for a long period of time,

Vet was out today and is going to review in 48 hours and see if we need to re-bandage the top part (where the wound is). In the meantime I have gel to put on that part, and cream for the lower part.

And here  was me hoping we were on last stretch - it seems we have a few more corners to negotiate yet :(
